Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
