RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
